The Mean Diet

Lots of things are different in New York than what we're used to in the places we've lived (Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina and Texas). Sure, there are plenty of cultural differences...fashion trends vary, people sound different, do you say soda or pop or just Coke? But one of the biggest difference has been a brutal eye opener for us.

Really?
In 2008, New York became the first state in the union implementing a law forcing chain restaurants to post the calorie count of each food in the same size and font as the price. Talk about sticker shock! Of course the idea is to reduce the number of obese New Yorkers by 150,000 over the next five years, and prevent 30,000 cases of diabetes.

On our very first visit to Albany, we were sitting in a TGI Fridays and quickly realized there were somethings we really just didn't want to know. There were only a few things on the menu that were under 1,000 calories! And the things that you would think were healthy weren't...the pecan-crusted chicken salad, served with mandarin oranges, dried cranberries and celery had 1,360 calories!

After a couple of months of enjoying all this New York food and trying not to read all those numbers we realized it was catching up with us.  Dr. Carrie Carda, (Heather's own Dr. Oz) recommended trying the HC3 Trim diet plan and shipped it from Missouri just for us in New York.  The Garretts were super gung-ho about the prospect of losing 40 lbs. in 40 days!  Until we started reading the instructions...and realized we had just signed on for the meanest diet ever.

Skinny in a box
HC3 Trim is a pharmaceutical grade homeopahtic hCG hormone free metabolic program designed to burn fat, not muscle.  Our diet kit came with a bottle of Methyl vitamin B-12, Power Greens antioxidants, Dual-Tox DPO detoxification support, ketone testing tinkle sticks and a couple of bottles of the HC3 Trim homeopathic drops.  The drops help your body burn between 3,500-4,000 calories a day!

The first two days of the diet are the best thing ever.  Called "fat loading," you are supposed to eat everything you can fit into your mouth.  Like seriously, it's supposed to be three Thanksgiving dinners a day for two days.  If you do this diet, eat like it's your last meal folks.  We didn't realize that it would be and sorely look back on these days and play "shoulda, woulda, coulda" all the time.

The Devil sells Cupcakes
Days 3-40:  Welcome to Hell.  Now you begin a strict 500 calorie a day diet that cuts out all gluten, dairy and carbohydrates.  Take your body weight and divide it in half-now drink that amount of water in ounces.  You'll save tons on what you would normally spend on food, but plan on upping your budget on toilet paper because you tinkle all the time!  In the beginning food cravings were brutal.  The proteins of chicken and fish paired with five stalks of asparagus just weren't cutting it.  500 calories a day is pretty limiting.  You know those frozen chicken breasts you get from Wal-Mart?  Well, you get to eat half of one of those...for dinner.  Temptation is everywhere!  Peanut butter in the pantry.  Pretzels in the freezer.  Eating out isn't really an option anymore.  A food truck selling cupcakes in the parking lot of Target nearly derailed this whole mess.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
While it totally sucked, it's worked so far!  With just a few hitches, we've consistantly lost the half to full pound a day promised by the diet.  Heather did plateau at one point and had to do an "apple day" to reset her system.  Imagine her surprise when the dietician told her to only eat six apples and drink her recommended ounces of water for the day...and she lost two pounds overnight.

We've become masters of spices and have learned how to use Splenda to our advantage and now cook with small amounts of Coconut Oil.  40 days is a long time and the Garretts hope to transform from chunky monkeys to skinny minnies!  The mean diet has made us miss out of some great NY food and even an ice cream eating contest, but we  hope it will be worth it in the end.  We'll keep you posted!

  1. That pecan crusted salad you speak of? I would have initally thought it was a good thing to eat and even did eat one in Nashville last year. I only recently found out the calorie content. I was shocked. I look forward to following your successes and day to day experiences. Keep the blog comin'.

  2. I'm intrigued by this diet. However, it seems to me that if you only eat 500 calories daily, you'd lose weight even without any kind of diet pills!

    1. Wrong. Your body would go into starvation mode and hoard fat. You need to buy the kit because there are several nutritional supplements to keep your body healthy during this low calorie time period.

  3. I am on this diet too. I HATE IT!!!! I have lost 12 pounds in 14 days but it has come at a high price. between the starvation and being sick to my stomach there has been a lot of tears. it is especially bad when I have to fix food for my children. I will say though, my headaches I would have everyday before doing this diet are totally gone and i can actually breath out of my nose. the detox part really does work.

  4. I thought the same thing, but the difference is if you were eating only 500 calories or less without this diet, your body would go into starvation mode. Therefore, stopping your body from losing weight. Instead of losing, you'll actually gain weight, because your body will be eating off of stored fat. With Hc3 drops, it opens up your fat cells, releasing 3,500 to 4,000 calories..therefore, helping you lose weight.

  5. I am on the mean diet too. This is actually my second cycle of HC3. I have lost a total of 55 lbs. It is very hard to restrict, but the rate of losing 1 lb/per day is very rewarding. I am down three dress sizes. The "reset" period of 1200 calories and exercise is great. It is really teaching and testing you to stick to a low calorie, low carb, moderate exercise lifestyle. I gain no weight during the "reset." It is the mean diet, but so well worth it.

  6. Why do you have to buy the kit? I would just want the drops and cut out all the other junk that comes in the kit.

  7. You don't have to get the kit to do the diet, that was just how my doctor sold the drops in her office. I've seen the drops for sale on eBay by themselves and in stores like GNC too.
