New Year's Resolution: December 5K

Exactly 12 months ago we set our New Year's Resolution:  finish a 5K a month in the year 2010.  It is with great pride that we announce we actually met our goal!

Heather & Brett did race #12 in Charlotte, North Carolina!  We ran in the Jingle Bell 5K at Olympic High School in Brett's school district, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.  Heather mistakenly tweeted earlier that we were running at Brett's high school and to clarify, he graduated from East Mecklenburg.  Had he gone to a small country kid school like Heather, there would have been no question that there would have been only one school in the district, most likely with one building for classes.

We finished race 12/12!
Our race benefited the Olympic High School JROTC, which meant that most of the JROTC kids showed up to run.  Take a wild guess how we compared to a bunch of 17-year-old boys running in December not wearing shirts?  We weren't dead last, but we weren't exactly leading the pack either.  Unfortunately, Olympic High School had just hosted a cross country meet about a week earlier so the grounds were still marked with their running trail...Heather had a little trouble following the arrows (there were a lot and they were all pointing in different directions!) at a couple of points and may have added to her time.

Last quarter mile of the last race!
He's like the wind...
We were super lucky to have our own cheering section at our final race!  Brett's parents, Dean & Taryn Garrett, rolled out of bed at the crack of dawn to watch us finish our Resolution.  Because of our driving snafu from the previous night, we didn't make it in to Charlotte until about 2:00 a.m. and our race was at 9:30.  We were so thankful they came that we snuck them a couple of extra Capri Sun's and a few granola bars.  It was the least we could do to take them to breakfast after all.

Yea for Team Garrett!
We ended up running 12 races in 7 states with our New Year's Resolution and logged 37.2 miles.  We've listened to countless songs on our iPods, been lapped by kids half our age and adults twice as old.  We never won a race, but we never really lost either.

We now have a stack of super fabulous 5K t-shirts that will soon find their way into a "look what I did in 2010" quilt.  We'll be sure to post that blog soon!
